Biographical Sketch: Dr. James A. Popio is General Manager and Director of Engineering at Smithers Scientifics’ Ravenna Laboratory. He received his PhD in engineering and his MS, and BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Akron. He has spent his professional career working for and/or with the tire companies, automotive OEMs, industry suppliers, standards organizations, and government agencies. He has worked with tires for 15 years, 10 of those at Smithers Scientific. Dr. Popio’s experiences deal mainly with tire performance, characterization, and methods development. He currently works in the areas of force and moment, endurance, compliance, indoor wear, rolling resistance, and characterization for modeling. Dr. Popio has provided several presentations and publications to many organizations including ACS. Most recently he presented at the Clemson Tire Conference.
