LANXESS Elastomers is the leading EPDM rubber manufacturer. As our response to a call to increase the eco-friendliness of rubber, we have succeeded to produce the world’s first bio-based EPDM rubber: Keltan® ECO 5470 EPDM. Ethylene monomer used in Keltan® ECO 5470 EPDM production is derived from sugar cane-based ethanol. In thermoset EPDM rubber compounds, Keltan® ECO 5470 EPDM is a direct drop-in for its look-alike product, Keltan® 5470, that uses fossil-based ethylene.

In this study, we report the use of Keltan® ECO 5470 EPDM in thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) applications. TPV products are often considered more environmentally friendly than thermoset rubbers for their recyclability. Our study shows that Keltan® ECO 5470 EPDM can be used to produce TPV products with a wide range of physical properties. With the new application development of Keltan® ECO 5470 EPDM, we can offer LANXESS Keltan® ECO EPDM rubber to a broader customer base where either thermoset rubbers or thermoplastic elastomers are used.
