Biographical Sketch: Derek McPhee is the Senior Director of Technology Strategy at Amyris Inc., a biotechnology company based in Emeryville (California), focused on the production of renewable alternatives to petroleum-based fuels and specialty chemicals. He has a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Calgary. After postdoctoral studies at the NRC Canada, the rest of his career has been in industry, first with Uniroyal Chemical (now Chemtura) working on the discovery, development and manufacture of agricultural, rubber and specialty chemicals, then in the generic pharmaceutical industry with Brantford Chemicals (now Apotex Pharmachem), and as Director of Chemistry and VP of a U.S/Canada-based custom synthesis company. Before joining Amyris in March 2005 as Director of Chemistry he was a self-employed consultant to several startups. He is the sole author/co-author of over 25 patents, 20 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and 2 book chapters.
