The reinforcement of elastomers provided by “one-dimensional” multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and by “two-dimensional” platelet-like layered silicates with the beneficial impact of furnace CB on rubber will be compared. Taylored mixing strategies to disperse the nanofillers and the potential to achieve high mechanical reinforcement, orientation effects, barrier properties and synergistic effects arising from the combination of conventional fillers with high aspect ratio nanofillers will represented. The focus of the work is the mutual interaction of each of the two nanofillers with CB that will lead under certain circumstances to synergistic effects of primarily with respect to dynamic properties, tear energy and dynamic cut growth.
