Formulating Ultra High Molecular Weight EPDM to Match Fatigue and Dynamic Performance of Natural Rubber While Maintaining Superior Heat and Environmental Resistance
Recent advances in EPDM technology, allows for the production of an ultra-high molecular weight EPDM (ultra-EPDM), with tailored molecular structure, which matches the strength and resilience of natural rubber (NR) while also maintaining these superior properties after high temperature exposure. Previous published studies have demonstrated the ability to formulate an ultra-high molecular weight EPDM with dynamic properties surpassing typical EPDM and matching NR.
More recent studies have focused on further improving fatigue resistance, by optimizing the EPDM compound formulation. In particular, excellent results have been obtained with the blending of diene rubbers into EPDM at low levels. These formulation and mixing techniques have yielded nano-sized domains which inhibit dynamic crack growth, reaching the performance levels of natural rubber. With this new novel technology and polymer, EPDM based compounds can be used in dynamic applications, with markedly improved heat resistance, good dynamics and excellent fatigue resistance.
