Analysis of Crack Initiaion of Rubber Abrasion By X-Ray Imaging Method
X-ray imaging was applied to observe abrasion phenomena while rubber specimens rubbed against rounded tip needle at the present study.
Behavior of rubber fracture was observed by taking images at a rate of 59 frames per second at SPring-8 BL19B2.
Mechanism of crack generation, propagation and formation of abrasion pattern on rubber surface was proposed as follow.
Firstly, tiny crack on the rubber surface is generated by the stress concentration at trailing edge of the needle tip.
Initiated crack propagates opposite to sliding direction of rubber by extensional strain between the rubber surface and tip of the needle.
At this moment, part of crack is immobilized by the needle tip.
Tongue-like crack is formed as a result of propagation and tongue-like abrasion pattern is also observed due release of the crack from the needle tip.
