With the introduction of silica into rubber formulations for the tire industry, new synthetic and functionalized elastomers have been developed. In this paper we will review some of these synthetic elastomers. First, how to combine high level of performance and industrial robustness for functionalized solution SBR. Second, how to introduce functional groups on high cis BR, polymerized with Ziegler Natta catalyst. Last, the specificity of isoprene chain end with functionalized SIR will be covered. The paper will also highlight the use of chemistry to contribute to the 4R (Reduce, re-use, recycle, renewable) Michelin strategy.
