Biographical Sketch: Shingo Futamura has over forty years of experience in rubber science and tire technology and has authored 25 scientific papers and 50 US patents. He received his Ph.D. in Polymer Science from The University of Akron, MS from University of Michigan and BS from Waseda University. At Firestone Tire & Rubber Co, he characterized the relationship between the structure of solution SBR and the physical properties and tire performance of tread compounds. He also proposed the concept of "Deformation Index" to define the relative impact of visco and elastic properties on tire performance characteristics. This concept has been widely used by material scientists for optimizing compound properties for desired tire performance. The deformation index has also been applied for FEA analysis to simplify the numerical calculation of energy loss and temperature distributions in a rolling tire. Shingo has worked for Nippon Zeon Co., Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
