Biographical Sketch: Rudi Faust received his Ph.D. in Colloid Chemistry in 1978 from Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary. Subsequently, he was a Visiting Scientist, at The University of Akron, before joining the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1988. He is currently Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry. He served as Editor of Polymer Bulletin (1998-2007) and currently serves as Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Macromolecular Science (1991-present). In 2006 he received the prestigious Ralph Milkovich Memorial Lecturer award from the University of Akron, and in 2010 the Chemistry of Thermoplastic Elastomers award from the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society.
He pioneered living carbocationic polymerization, a terminationless and transferless process for the polymerization of alkenes. His research is directed toward the synthesis, characterization and properties of new thermoplastic elastomers based on block and graft copolymers, functional polymers by in situ functionalization and polymers for medical applications.
He has advised 21 Ph. D. students and 40+ postdoctorals. He has published over 240 papers, 5 book chapters/books and 25 patents.
