Biographical Sketch: Yuanming Xia was born in Shanghai on October 26th, 1942. He received his B. c. degree in solid mechanics, Department of Modern Mechanics (DMM), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in July, 1966. After graduation, he was engaged in technique work in mechanical engineering over a long period of time. He returned to DMM, USTC, and served as teacher in September, 1978. Prof. Xia Yuanming was Director of Department of Precision Machinery and Instrumentation, Vice Dean of School of Engineering Science, member of the Academic Committee and the Academic Degree Committee of USTC. Now he is professor and Ph.D. advisor of Department of Modern Mechanics, Scientist in chief of Laboratorial Centre of Engineering and Material Science of USTC. His main research fields include: techniques of tensile impact experiment and instantaneous measurement, dynamic response of composite materials, materials dynamics, structural dynamics, fracture dynamic, engineering design and calculation.
