Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Smith earned a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Buffalo, specializing in the properties of engineering materials. He was then awarded a D.I.C. (Diploma of Membership of the Imperial College, London), in this same field. This was followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, Canada, specializing in silicate and aluminate chemistry, including microstructure, crystallography and surface chemistry. As a consultant, he has specialized in the frictional characteristics (slip resistance) of rubber footwear heels and soles. He has written a number of peer-review papers on this subject and has authored a book entitled, "Analyzing Friction in the Design of Rubber Products and Their Paired Surfaces," published in 2008 by CRC Press.
