Dr. Marion Pottinger is recieving the Tire Society Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Marion Pottinger, a Professional Engineer, is the owner of M’gineering, LLC a consulting practice devoted to concepts in machines and mechanics with particular application to tires and tire/vehicle systems. Over 40 years he has worked in almost every area of tire mechanics both as a practicing engineer and a manager. He is best known for his work with respect to tire force and moment properties and the mechanics of the tire footprint with application to wear. He authored the chapters on these areas which appear in The Pneumatic Tire edited by J. D. Walter and A. N. Gent. Dr. Pottinger was a member of the committee that prepared TRB 286 Tires and Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy, which was instrumental in producing the current tire energy consumption labeling legislation. He wrote the APPENDIX on testing. He is widely published in a number of areas (58 papers, parts of five books, plus government restricted reports and patents) and is a member of the team that teaches the University of Akron Tire Mechanics course. Dr. Pottinger has given numerous lectures including the plenary lecture for The Tire Society in 1997. He was later president of the society. Since leaving the United States Air Force in 1969, Dr. Pottinger has concentrated on the areas of tire and tire/vehicle mechanics. In this period, he has worked for Goodrich (Senior Manager), Uniroyal Goodrich (Senior Research Associate), and Smithers now Smithers RAPRA (Technical Director) besides founding M’gineering. In these positions Dr. Pottinger has been responsible for originating and/or executing numerous projects including a major Noise and Vibrations Laboratory and performing the startup of the force and moment operations at Smithers going from an empty piece of land to a functioning business. He has consulted for automobile, tire, and equipment manufacturers as well as for governmental entities. At this time he is chairman of the task force revising SAE J2047 – “Tire Performance Terminology” as well as serving as a member of the SAE Highway Tire Forum Committee and the SAE Vehicle Dynamics Standards Committee. Dr. Pottinger acquired his MS and Ph.D. from Purdue University and his B.S.M.E. from the University of Cincinnati. He is President Emeritus of the Tire Society and has been particularly active in SAE and ASTM, two of the five technical societies of which he is currently a member. He is a member of the Society of the Sigma Xi. |
