Due to impending fuel efficiency rating requirements, measurement of tire rolling resistance has become more important than ever before. Variability of measurements from different rolling resistance measurement machines has been a concern, and as a result, authorities around the world have established alignment methods to ensure consistent and fair rating of tire rolling resistance.
In the first stage of this study, we evaluate the sensitivity of rolling resistance measurement to different input parameters such as normal load, inclination angle, slip angle and tire inflation pressure using a take a typical design-of-experiments (DOE) approach. The results are compared with previously published findings. In the second stage, we review the current procedures to align rolling resistance measurements against well-established statistical standards for alignment. Based on the results of the first two stages, we suggest improvements to the current procedure and additional steps that may facilitate robust alignment of tire rolling resistance measurement machines. |
