General discussion on rolling resistance of a non-pneumatic tire is presented.  The shear band is the critical component of a non-pneumatic tire (NPT) when determining rolling resistance resulting from an elastomer’s shear friction.  A computation method to obtain rolling resistance of a NPT using finite element analysis with ABAQUS is presented.  Clemson engineers’ meta-material shear bands which are shear flexible yet low viscoelastic energy loss are presented.  Future research direction of the shear band design is also discussed considering cost and manufacturability.
