Synthetic Amorphous Silica for Silicone Rubber Compounding

Prof. Dr. habil. Wojciech Pisula, Mario Scholz,

The silicone industry as we know it would be inconceivable without the use of synthetic silica.

The molecular formulas for precipitated [1] and fumed silica [2] are identical: SiO2, their application properties are quite different and each of the two materials provides a unique set of advantages.

With this presentation we want to present i) how synthetic silica is produced, ii) the possibilities for its physical, mechanical and/or chemical refinement and iii) how the resulting products improve silicone elastomers properties.
