Biographical Sketch:
B. S.- chemistry (Cal- Berkeley); PhD- physical chemistry (Wisconsin- Madison). From 1974 until retirement in 2004, Dr. Gillen was in the Polymer Group at Sandia, where he spent the last 15 years as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff. His research concentrated on aging and degradation of polymers in radiation, temperature, humidity and mechanical stress environments. Since retiring, he has worked continuously as a part-time consultant for Sandia and outside organizations on polymer aging issues. He has published numerous papers, invited reviews and book chapters, given many invited talks and taught parts of two Polymer Degradation short courses. He has served on several IEEE and IEC Committees. In 1999, he was selected as the North American Editor for the Elsevier Journal “Polymer Degradation and Stability” and served in this capacity for seven years, during which the “Impact Factor” of this journal more than tripled, going from 0.641 to 2.174.
