A material study and literature review were conducted to better understand polymer-filler interactions in elastomeric materials.  Specifically, filled fluorocarbon and hydrogenated nitrile elastomers were examined in order to better understand the reinforcing nature of carbon black.  Physical properties along with thermal and chemical resistance of both elastomer types were evaluated in order to better understand polymer-filler interfaces.  A literature search yielded little information regarding polymer-filler interactions specific to fluorocarbon thermoset polymers (FKM), however there was much in the review that pertains to FKM.  The findings of the material study and literature review provided valuable insights into filler reinforcement and the extent of mechanical interactions between both FKM and hydrogenated nitrile elastomer and respective incorporated fillers.
