There have been a series of developments for AEM polymers that have led to compounds with better processability and/or better cured physical properties.  For some injection molded compounds the improved polymers have led to a step change reduction in mold fouling.

The improved AEM polymers have a higher Mooney viscosity compared to the standard polymers.  This feature has been important in designing low hardness compounds (about 50 Shore A) that have good physicals and that are easier to mold.  For extruded compounds the higher viscosity has led to an increase in green strength.

Other improvements in the hose polymers have led to longer scorch times while at the same time providing better cured physicals. The improved AEM hose polymers provide compounds that have a better balance of compression set and dynamic properties.

There have been major improvements for automotive engines have led to reduced emissions and energy consumption.  These improvements have also led to more aggressive fluids being present in modern engines.  Blow-by gas and exhaust gas condensates contribute to acid condensates which have a low pH.  Alcohols and acids from biofuels can concentrate in the engine oil along with combustion byproducts.  Compounds made with the improved AEM polymers have been tested in the combination of engine oil with low pH at high temperatures.  These compounds age well in this harsh environment.
