The use of silica in tire products is expanding due to its superior performance in rolling resistance, wear and wet traction. Global tire labeling initiatives along with increased consumer awareness is driving the demand for tires with silica technology. This brings challenges in mixing efficiency and environmental emissions. Cooper Tire and the Industrias Negromex S.A. de C.V. (INSA) have developed a patented process (US Patent 8357733) to produce fully hydrophobated emulsion based silica masterbatch that will assist the industry in meeting the increased demand. A full scale commercial silica masterbatch production line has been developed with product available for purchase from INSA. In this presentation we will introduce basic concepts of silica masterbatch technology and its use in tires. Specific benefits will be covered including processing efficiencies, elimination of alcohol emissions, silica dispersion, compound properties, and tire test performance. The silica masterbatch product is available through the “Emulsil” product line offered by Kuo Elastomers.
