Biographical Sketch:
Sabet Abdou-Sabet was born in Cairo, Egypt, immigrated to the United States in 1959 after receiving his B. Sc. degree in Chemistry with Honors from Ein Shams University. After a short employment as a chemist at Scherr Brothers, he was drafted into the Army and was assigned to Walter Reed Institute of Research to help in the identification of potential active agents to combat the effects of ionizing radiation. Upon his Honorable discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Maryland, in College Park, MD with a Research Grant from the Army to pursue the identification of potential chemicals against the effects of atomic radiation. He received his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry in 1966, and upon graduation, he joined Monsanto Chemicals Co. He held a number of positions including Director of R/D for the Santoprene® Elastomer Business Group. This business was Joint Ventured with Exxon Chemicals in 1990-1991, and he became the Chief Scientist for the new venture named Advanced Elastomer Systems, which was later acquired by ExxonMobil. He retired at the end of 1999, and holds 25 US patents, as well as their foreign filings. In retirement he remains active by consulting, teaching Polymer Blends and Alloys at the University of Akron, developing elastomer courses at the University of Akron Research Foundation, and pursuing his hobbies of woodworking, photography, and gardening. He has been married for 43 years to Jeanne, has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Prior to this award he was honored by the following awards: Recognized as One of the Top 100 People/Innovation that Shaped the Rubber Industry, by the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society, October, 2009 Recipient of the 1996 Technical Award from the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers (IISRP), Bath, UK. Recognized by the NYC Museum of Modern Art in 1995 in an exhibit titled “Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design” where Santoprene® and its co- inventors are cited.
