Legislated tire labeling requirements continue to challenge the tire supply chain to innovate new materials, so that tire performance can be accelerated and consumers can make better informed decisions. Improving rolling resistance is a high priority so that better fuel economy can be achieved both in original equipment and replacement tire industry. From a safety standpoint, the optimization of wet traction is also a critical parameter. Other metrics such as reducing noise or improving treadwear are valued depending on the region of interest.

This presentation will review solution SBRs (SSBRs) of global interest and their influence on tire properties. It will include lab predictor results, as well as tire test data where available. Specifically, the effect of batch versus continuous polymerized SSBRs will be compared and the benefit of high vinyl versus high styrene SSBRs will be highlighted. Examples of clear grades and oil extended grades will be shown. Results from LANXESS’s most recent innovative work to design and produce on an industrial scale both in-chain (or “main chain”) as well as end group functionalized SSBRs will also be discussed.
