PYROLYSIS CARBON BLACK; AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE RUBBER INDUSTRY

Pyrolysis carbon black from the pyrolysis of used tyres have been, around, at least on conferences, for some time. Their commercial production and use in the industry might have been suffering from both a lack of founded technical approach and the appropriate industrial initiative.

The paper will in its first part summarize the analytical aspects of the pyrolysis blacks, it will discuss the feasibility and meaning of the various carbon black tests performed on this material.

In its second part it will focuse on the actual practical usage of this carbon black in rubber compounds.

The paper will furthermore discuss the relation between rubber properties and analytical parameters in the case of pyrolysis blacks.

A way to successful compounding with pyrolysis black will be suggested.  Actual confirmed applications will be listed and discussed.

Finally the specificities of pyrolysis black will be analysed and new potential application domains will be outlined.
