We will explore the advances in Polyphosphazene rubber materials and the broad spectrum of products and applications this unique platform technology provides for the Health Care Industry.

The initial bio-medical application for polyphosphazene elastomer consisted of a soft, durable denture liner for the dental industry. The product was a FDA Class II application and was marketed by Hygenics Corporation under the Novus™ label. It offered several unique properties which were well suited for the application. The material disappeared from the market in 1994 when the PNF™ Gum Stock manufacturer ceased production and took the base material off the market.

There are numerous other applications that have since been developed and are in testing with the Phosphorus-Nitrogen (P=N) backbone. The new materials have other side groups substituted on the phosphorus atom in the backbone and have some of the same basic characteristics such as bio-compatibility, durability and dampening..

We will explore these advances, applications and why the material is ideal for these biomedical applications during our paper.
