State of the art simulation considers more relevant technical details of an injection molding process. When simulation of the process is coupled with the 3D mold components, cooling channels, complete runner system and part geometries, the injection molding process is actually simulated, rather than assumed. The higher degree of accuracy of such simulation results allows engineers to make accurate and confident decisions about tooling designs and process parameters. The vent size, mold temperature, and filling time can be evaluated simultaneously to engineer a mold with a sufficient processing window. The impact of various mold materials and heater configurations can be quantitatively understood and optimized for elastomer injection molding.

This paper presents and discusses the components of state of the art simulation and the financial impact of a complete simulation approach. The relationship between mold temperature, filling time, curing degree and vent size is discussed with the focus on cost optimization and lean manufacturing criteria.
