This paper will describe liquid silicone and how it is molded.  Many plastic injection molding firms are embracing liquid silicone molding because of its similarity to plastic molding and its use of pre-compounded materials.  This paper will differentiate liquid silicone from plastic injection and what plastic injection molders should be wary of in entering this market.  Initial discussion will describe this unique, low-viscosity thermoset elastomer, why it is preferred, and typical applications.  Discussion starts from raw materials, through molding and secondary operations.  Emphasis will be placed on the injection molding process.  Required equipment will be described and how it works.  Typical pitfalls to avoid will be outlined.  Specific detail will revolve around pumping units, secondary pumping units, static mixers, injection units, molds and presses.  Further discussion will cover pre-molding and secondary operations.  Two-component molding, including automated two-shot molding will also be covered.
