Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Mark R. Gurvich is currently Principal Scientist and Project Leader at the United Technologies Research Center (UTRC). Prior joining UTRC in 2002, he worked for 5 years at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as a Senior Engineer, was a Visiting Scientist at The University of Connecticut and Fulbright Scholar at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior coming to USA in 1994, he was an Associate Professor in Riga Technical University (Riga, Latvia) where he received his M.S. (Honor Degree) in Civil Engineering, Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, as well as Habilitation (Dr.Habil.Sc.Ing.). Dr. Gurvich’s research is primarily focused on mechanics of elastomers and composite materials, as well as structural reliability. His results have been presented in over 100 publications including 70+ peer-reviewed papers, a book, and a patent (with several pending patents). Mark is an active member of the Rubber Division, and was a co-chair of Symposium “Engineering Design of Rubber Components” in 2004 and 2005. Among his numerous awards are Fulbright Fellowship, Window-on-Science Award (US Air Force), the Best Paper Award at Annual Rubber Congress (2005), Outstanding Achievement Award (UTRC), Inventor Awards (UTRC), and Trade Secret Awards (Goodyear).
