ABSTRACT
The Dow Chemical Company produces NORDEL™ IP Hydrocarbon Rubber products (EPDM polymers) to the highest quality standards.  An automated optical gel/contaminate detection system has been used for almost a decade to assure quality.  The defect detection system has been recently upgraded to state-of-the art standards and equipment.  As a first for the EPDM industry, gel quality is now being reported on the certificate of analysis for all branded products.  This paper discusses the methodology used, as well as the instruments and the capability in measuring gels in EPDM polymers
