Vor-x functionalized graphene sheets, developed by Vorbeck Materials Corp., have been found to be multifunctional fillers for elastomer systems. Graphene, a one-atom thick sheet of carbon, possesses extremely high mechanical strength and thermal conductivity, as well as unique electrical properties. The two-dimensional nature of the graphene sheets also increases the permeation barrier performance of elastomeric matrices. We will present data on graphene fillers used in industrially relevant rubber formulations, including the impact of graphene on the thermal, electrical, barrier and mechanical properties of the rubber systems. The experimental data is compared to recent modeling results to elucidate the nature of the reinforcing effect of two-dimensional fillers in elastomer systems.
