Gear Pumps for the Rubber Industry

William M. Murphy , Maag Pump Systems, Inc, Charlotte, NC
This paper will review the benefits of gear pumps for use in extrusion and compounding lines. The gear pump is a positive displacement device that meters rubber at a very
consistent flow rate, and also generates pressure very efficiently. It thus relieves the extruder of the pressure building responsibility and allows finer straining. Key benefits
are: reduced product temperature, consistent die pressure, increased throughputs, and a higher quality product. Commonly used in the thermoplastic industry for more than 25
years, a new generation of pumps has been developed specifically for the rubber industry. Recent successes have included pumps for straining, profiles, and wire and cable.
