Never before has the demand for more fuel efficient, safe, durable and environmentally friendly tires been greater. The rubber compound in the tire tread has a great influence on the resulting properties of a tire and styrene butadiene copolymers (SBR) make up a significant portion of the tire tread compound. LANXESS has focused tremendous attention in recent years on developing novel solution SBRs (S-SBRs) aimed at reducing rolling resistance, improving wet traction and wear. This paper reviews the successful   introduction of environmentally friendly process oils which meet upcoming regulations of the European Union and also demonstrates examples of new S-SBRs aimed at reducing rolling resistance
and improving wet traction.
